AMALFI has always been the capital of the Divine Coast, its origin is part of the legend, perhaps Roman or Greek, or chosen by Hercules himself for his beloved nymph Amalfi, as her last home because the colour of her eyes and the sea were exactly alike.The first Maritime Republic, Amalfi entered into relation with all the towns in the Mediterranean and the Middle East, coining its own money and drawing up the first international navigation law “ Table Amalphitane “. Giving its sailors the compass and making paper.Sacked repeatedly by the Pisans (1135 and 1137) Amalfi became a noble feud in the alterning foreign dominations.

Tokens of its glorious bygone days are preserved in many religious buildings – the marvellous cathedral devoted to S.Andrea, in the town museum one can also see the Amalfi coin – the Tarì – a rare “Tabule “ copy, the ancient ‘Confalone’ and the costumes of the republic times, worn during the historical

Worth while a visit are the paper museum, the Peasant art museum, the Paradise cloister, aristocratic buildings, fountains, the Emerald Grotto and marvellous views.

There is very good ferry boat public transport from Salerno to Amalfi and the rest of the Coast and islands during the Summer months.
From NAPLES AIRPORT take the Tangenziale road (which is the ring road that by-passes the city of Naples) and then from this highway take the SALERNO REGGIO CALABRIA exit, you will then come to the Autostrada del Sole toll post where you will be asked to pay the standard toll.
Along the motorway you will see Mount Vesuvius on the left hand side. You will pass the towns of Ercolano, Torre Annunziata, Torre del Greco and Pompei. Then take the CASTELLAMARE exit, once through the toll post, follow the arrows to AMALFI/COSTIERA AMALFITANA, you will be driving along the Lattari Mountains through the towns of Gragnano, Agerola, Furore etc.. Once you have come down the Coast road, you turn LEFT towards AMALFI
