Amalfi

AMALFI  has always been the capital of the Divine Coast, its origin is part of the legend, perhaps Roman or Greek, or chosen by Hercules himself for his beloved nymph Amalfi, as her last home because the colour of her eyes and the sea were exactly alike. The first Maritime Republic, Amalfi entered into relation with all the towns in the Mediterranean and the Middle East, coining its own money and drawing up the first international navigation law “ Table Amalphitane “.  Giving its sailors the compass and making paper.Sacked repeatedly by the Pisans (1135 and 1137) Amalfi became a noble feud in the alterning foreign dominations.

Amalfi

Tokens of its glorious bygone days are preserved in many religious buildings – the marvellous cathedral devoted to S.Andrea, in the town museum one can also see the Amalfi coin – the Tarì – a rare “Tabule “ copy, the ancient ‘Confalone’ and the costumes of the republic times, worn during the historical

regata, a rowing race lodged on shifts by Amalfi, Pisa, Genova and Venice, the four greatest maritime republics of the past.

Worth while a visit are the paper museum, the Peasant art museum, the Paradise cloister, aristocratic buildings, fountains, the Emerald Grotto and marvellous views.
