Sorrento
SORRENTO of Phoenician origin, was at the apogee of its fame in the Middle Ages as a free duketown on the sea contending with Amalfi and Naples the supremacy in the North Tyrrhenian sea.
It is the native town of Torquato Tasso (1544) the singer of 'Gerusalemme Liberata' and thanks to the Grand Tours in the Romantic Age, pictures, travel reports, films on the notes of the wonderful 'Torna a Surriento' by De Curtis, it has always been an attraction for each traveller.

Rich of monuments and natural beauties, worth while a visit are the marvellous Roman Cathedral, the church of Servi di Maria, Tasso residence, the museum Correale.

Local crafts : wood inlay, lace making.

In the wooded hills of Sorrento is MASSALUBRENSE & S.Agata, less touristic small villages, with dazzling sceneries and panorama. There are many itineraries amongst the hills and seaside for those who love the calm and charm of discovery.

  S. AGATA SUI DUE GOLFI
(Massalubrense)

S.Agata Sui Due Golfi is situated about 7 Km from Sorrento and about 400 mt. Above sea level; it is a well known holiday resort and one of the 'pearls' in the Gulfs of Naples and Salerno facing Capri.
Etruscans, Greeks and Romans were enchanted by the beauties of the Siren Land and lived in the wooded hills for centuries. This has been confirmed by the wide necropolis existing on the northern side of the hill.
Probably on these hights -Montes Sireniani, they used to be called - was a sanctuary of Greek age dedicated to the mermaids. Later it was occupied by the Carmelitani Padri who built a Monastery which they gave the name ' Deserto'. In the Roman age it became the junction of merchant traffic between the two gulfs.
S.Agata nowadays derives its name from a Chapel built in the XVI by the Festinese family dedicating it to the young Sicilian Vergin.
